Google Maps Listings
Friday, 28 May 2010

A Google Maps Local Business Centre Listing is another way for your business to appear in Google’s search results, and an additional way to drive potential customers to your website.

An example of this is:

To add a listing to Google Maps:

The process begins with actually creating your business listing with Google maps after which Google will want to contact you to verify your company details.

Google does this providing a pin number by either phone call or post card. The phone call method is obviously the quickest, however the phone call will usually be made instantly and someone must be able to take the call and record the pin number.

Unfortunately if your company has an automated phone system then the phone call from Google will not work. In this case (or if the post card method is preferable) then you must ensure you can receive mail at the address you have entered into your listing (note: this must a physical address, IT CANNOT BE A PO BOX).

If you already have a listing in Google Maps

To claim your listing (if you did not create the listing, but you need to edit it), Google will need to issue a pin (in exactly the same way as new listings). This can either be issued by phone or mail.

If the address Google has on file is incorrect, or you cannot receive mail at this address and you cannot use the phone pin method, then the best thing to do is create a new Google Maps Listing from scratch.

Be sure to complete as many details in the listing as possible, this way Google should eventually display this new listing for your business rather than the one with incorrect details.

Unfortunately if you are unable to claim a listing using the phone or mail options, a listing with incorrect details for your business cannot be removed from Google’s search results.
